Andrena (“Dee”)

June 12, 2009

After 93 years, this angel has returned to heaven. Her final days were filled with peace, surrounded by love and prayers. Her memory is cherished by family & friends, including her two children, 5 grandchildren and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.
Dee’s greatest pleasure in life was keeping in touch with her extensive kin; they brought her great joy.

She will be met in heaven by her husband of 47 years, Edward; her parents;
8 of her 9 siblings, and countless friends who predeceased her.

Dee grew up in South Carolina, graduating from Sumter High School (1933), Winthrop College (1937) and George Peabody College (1944). She wore a Block W (outstanding work in athletics at Winthrop) and made most of the varsity teams at her alma mater. She taught PE at the University of South Carolina, as well as in Rhode Island and Texas. She met her husband during WWII while working as an Assistant Director of a USO Club in Charleston. They eventually started a family in California.

For many years, Dee was active in her parish. She worked at a local preschool, taught yoga to seniors and loved attending concerts and plays with her friends. She crocheted many keepsakes which will always be treasured. She and her husband loved square-dancing, were graceful ballroom dancers, and loved to sing;
Dee with her most beautiful singing voice.

She was a real Southern lady with a sweet Southern accent and a tiny stature – people always said she was the “cutest” thing (something she claimed she didn’t like). Her sweet nature somewhat hid her feistiness. She was incredibly open-minded & quite liberal in her views, had a keen sense of humor, and would always (politely) state her mind on any social or political issue. Her mind was sharp until the end.

She was a kind and selfless person and she inspired most everyone who knew her.
